A SOLDIER OF CHRIST
Advancing Encouragement By:
Bishop James Jr. Hairston

2Timothy: 2:3: Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

Paul was comforting Timothy because of His imprisonment awaiting his death from where he is writing this epistle. For the sake of Christ those who follow Him will endure hardship of some kind. Paul’s hardship was from the spreading of the Gospel and from an evil monster named Nero the Emperor of Rome. Nero was out to destroy the work of the Church and to have one of its renowned leaders whom are Paul thrown in prison waiting his death was a huge accomplishment for Nero but he did not win. Therefore, Timothy was one of Pauls’ sons in the Church to carry out the work of the Church for the salvation of many in the spreading of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul is using the analogy of a soldier for which we are soldiers of Christ that are out on the battle field warring against our enemies. Paul said to be a good soldier which means in the context to be valuable or virtuous and a worthy soldier from the word kalos or kal-os'. We have to be valuable in the Kingdom of God as worthy soldiers, making Jesus Christ Proud. A true soldier will not give up a good fight or give out in a battle when times get hard. You got to keep fighting knowing the victory is already won we just have to fight through it in Jesus name. This is where we become valuable to the Church when we endure hardship not giving up but continuing the work of the Church. To endure is to undergo hardship:--be afflicted, endure afflictions (hardness), and to suffer trouble. Does any of this sound familiar to you? Paul said in the next verse, no man that warred (or soldier of service) entangles himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. A soldier in battle cannot worry about what is going on at the home front but has to stay focus in on the battle at hand so that he can win the battle and the war to please him (the Commander and Chief) and the entire Nation that put him into battle. Hence, the one that put us into battle is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (our Commander and Chief) and our nation is the Kingdom of God. Our job is to only be concerned about the Kingdom and winning the war at hand. He will take care of all our needs and then some so that we can stay focus on Advancing the Kingdom of God. A soldier and his family are always provided for with food and shelter even while he is on the battle field. The affairs of this world cannot qualify as the main priority of a soldier and of the Kingdom of God. Trust God as a good and true Soldier of Christ and He will supply you with all of your needs, Philippians 4:19. There is a war out there in the World and it is not against guns, tanks, and fighter jets but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. This is our battle and we all have been called to war against it with our full armor of God, Ephesians, 6: 10-18 and as good soldiers of Christ we have the power, the authority, the might, and the victory to defeat the enemy so that the victory is ours, success is ours, prosperity is ours to accomplish the great things God has in-store for us in Jesus Name…
